If you’ve read my previous article “What is Holistic Wellness?” then you’ve already achieved a lot of clarity about what’s up with this amazing field of health and wellness. If you’re thinking that you’d love to dive in more and uncover how this could work for you, but you’re feeling a little daunted about where to get started, then Wellness Coaching might be for you!
Let’s dive in and find out exactly what this looks like. We’ll cover 5 key elements of Wellness Coaching, and also address some differences between your typical health experience with Western Medicine and Holistic Wellness.
The first noticeable trait of Holistic Wellness Coaching you’ll see is that we want to uncover the root of the issue. Typically in a doctor’s office, you’ll receive a diagnosis and a prescribed solution, however, you may never know why the issue popped up in the first place. In traditional medicine, it doesn’t matter why as long as you have the what: a diagnosis.
Holistic Wellness will consider many underlying issues, even ones that stretch beyond the basic workings of the body. Some examples include your emotional and spiritual health, relationships, or career and purpose. The Wellness Wheel below is an example of our overall health experience where in Holistic Wellness we believe everything is connected. This looks different for each person and that’s where the holistic experience begins for every individual.
A diagnosis by itself can be helpful for an actionable game plan moving forward, and honestly, sometimes it’s critical to your health. But after a diagnosis and prescription, this is where the treatment in a doctor’s office typically ends. Also, it’s where a Holistic Wellness Coach’s guidance can begin.
Whether you have a diagnosis and path of prescribed treatment, or if you fall into the medical middle pit (see previous blog) and have received the “you’re fine” diagnosis, the support and guidance of a coach can be the missing key to help you walk out your path to wellness, step by step, hand in hand.
Even a Functional Medicine doctor with wonderful care for their patients doesn’t always have the capacity to walk this intimately with their patients, and this is why Holistic Wellness Coaching is an extensive benefit to your care.
While a Wellness Coach can’t provide you with a diagnosis, they can provide you with support, accountability, and inspiration to build your new lifestyle.
For example, your doctor tells you to change your whole diet, work out three times a week, and reduce your stress. Then, he walks out, essentially saying “good luck figuring it out”. The job is done.
At first, you might feel encouraged that you received a path to start on! However, on the way home you enthusiastically start Googling eating plans and recipes, and the panic starts to set in. There are so many conflicting messages about what’s healthy. You’ve never even heard of some of these vegetables, let alone prepared them!
Also, you’re on board with working out, but you know that you’ve never been able to stay consistent in this area and you’re feeling discouraged about how to maintain this habit. You can feel your stress building. How in the world are you supposed to reduce your stress when this whole thing is very stress-inducing?
It’s ok! Take a deep breath . . . and find a Wellness Coach.
Where your doctor left off, a Wellness Coach can pick up by helping you find the eating lifestyle that works for you, even helping you find recipes.
They’ll also help you stay accountable in working out, and even find a solution that you enjoy more than what you’ve tried in the past.
They can also lead you toward reducing your lifestyle stress (besides the obvious weight-lifted of knowing you don’t have to do it all on your own!).
On the flip side, instead of a diagnosis, let’s say your doctor gives you the “you’re fine” stamp of approval and sends you on your merry way, leaving you discouraged and completely lost about where to go next.
When you know you’re not “fine” and you’re experiencing symptoms of being unwell, a Wellness Coach can also be a great solution for you – to help you BUILD your health, giving you confidence and clarity about how to steward your health and restore your life, energy, and joy.
Besides the obvious support of lifestyle changes, a Wellness Coach goes further to discover the whole person. This might include diving into your emotions, overcoming hidden mindsets, blocks to progress, or building consistency and healthy habits.
Overall, this is a very different level of support and framework.
Initially, this type of support from a Wellness Coach might sound amazing. We all want to get to the root of our issues and feel successful in our health.
However, there is one mindset roadblock that many people struggle to overcome. That’s because as a society, we’ve been conditioned to view our health through the lens of Western Medicine. Let’s take a look at where Western Medicine and Holistic Wellness take a fork in the road.
The flaw in this approach is that Western Medicine views the body as separate individual components, akin to a machine. Furthermore, treatments may benefit one part of the body while harming another, a consequence of this segmented view.
Holistic Wellness treats the body as an interconnected network, where healing one part often benefits multiple areas, ideally utilizing natural remedies.
This healing process isn’t a quick remedy, which may be frustrating for some.
Western Medicine may alleviate symptoms temporarily, but true healing is the goal of Holistic Wellness. It aims to restore health through deliberate efforts and mindful living.
Ultimately, you’ll see or feel the pull of these two very different methods of viewing your health as you switch between care.
You may even decide to seek out a Functional Medicine Practitioner (a doctor or Family Nurse Practitioner) who also follows a holistic path to healing with the benefit of prescription when truly necessary. This could alleviate some of the tension since your doctor and your health coach will align in many of their wellness beliefs.
Ultimately, it comes down to mindset. If you’re ready to invest in your health with steady and lasting progress, and stick to the process, then you’ll uncover a treasure of wellness you didn’t know was possible!
As you start to make changes to your health you’ll start to understand the benefit of living well as you experience elevated energy, a clearer mind and memory, less aches and pains, and possibly even less medications!
My hope is that you’ll also begin to understand the language of your body through the signals it sends you, and you’ll gain confidence and tools to steward your own health.
As a Wellness Coach, my goal is not to be an expert on your health. I know, crazy! My goal is to help you become an expert on your health. To empower you to rise to the position of being your own primary care provider.
In this place, you get to decide what’s best for you, you can feel great about seeking out natural solutions, and to make the calls on your health and your body. Everyone else (doctors, coaches, etc), they’re here to serve and educate you so you can steward your own health.
In this way, you’ll cultivate a lifetime of wellness – and you’ll know where to go when you need a little help, a little education, or a little support – but ultimately your health will be in your hands. That’s a beautiful way to build a life of wellness.
